My visiting with clients and friends this week is not bringing up any surprises. They are a tough, optimistic bunch that is interested in staying the course and surviving.
Each of them has taken steps to keep their operations going. They are bidding more projects – when possible. Lay offs have been implemented for craft and staff. Reduced work week hours and pay cuts are in effect. They are developing alternate plans if the business climate stays the same or gets worse. None of them have seen the “benefit” of any stimulus funds. In fact, all of them are highly skeptical of any stimulus benefit! Many are going greater distances to satisfy their existing clients.
As one specialty subcontractor said, “I am focused on the business problems of this week and month. I know of the problems coming in January, but they will have to wait”.
All of us are watching for the industry to continue its shakeout and thinning of the contractor and subcontractor ranks. All of us plan to outlast the competition. I believe we will succeed!
