It can be easy for a contractor to play favoritism to subcontractors and vendors. If the “preferred” company is not low, it can be justifiable to still use them on the bid because of the relationships that already have been developed on prior projects. This can alleviate some headaches and improve efficiencies for managing the project.
As a word caution though, you better make sure you are prepared for the ramifications of the decision not to use the low bidder! This can affect pricing from the low bidder for years to come which could cost you future projects and a loss of potential profit. The rumor mill could also construe it as bid shopping which can also affect pricing on your future projects!
If you have decided to use a certain company based on the circumstances of the project, then don’t solicit or accept other quotes. This also applies to owners selecting the general contractor. Contractors will not continue to provide estimates if they believe they are just keeping their competitor “honest”.
